Want to make a job change but not quite sure how?  Tired of feeling the “Sunday Scaries” every week but never making any progress on your goal to find a career or situation that will make you happier?

It can be a frustrating cycle of being too busy to find the time to really think about the change you want and getting stuck for a longer and a longer period being somewhere you don’t like.

Introducing a one-of-kind program for career professionals seeking to transition to a different role in the workforce or back into the workforce. This program provides the framework and structure you need to think through what it is you want and needs, while making effective use of the time you do have to identify not only what you want out of a transition quantitatively and qualitatively, but how you can budget your time going forward.

"Working with Amy, things I used to consider to be small accomplishments in my career ended up not being that small after all. She's helped me find takeaways from every step of my career, and find ways to truly project the value of each of my skills in ways I'd never have been able to articulate on my own."

I also offer ways to present your skills as transferrable from the role and industry you are into the role and industry you want to get into. If we work together individually, I can help you tailor the specific tools and stories you need.

“Amy’s help in revising my resume and positioning my work experience for a slightly different career path was incredibly helpful. Moreover, her knowledge about networking and interviewing provided me with solid skills and the confidence to make a transition.”

What We Do When We Work Together

First, define the reasons why you are unhappy.  They matter because every interviewer is going to know why you are looking.  You want to have a good answer to the question “why do you want this job” and the answer cannot be “I don’t like the job I have now.”  You want to define why you are moving towards something, not running away from something else.

Next, go through a proprietary framework for defining what you need and want from a career transition: qualitatively and quantitatively. Don’t work backward once you have an offer to fit your budget and lifestyle into the offer, know the parameters of what you will be looking for prior to even starting your search.

You’ll then want to understand how to focus on what you want and need in a job search.  How can you best leverage your network?  What can you say about your transferable skills that present them most effectively? Which tools will be most helpful for you?

Lastly, you’ll want to create a reasonable timeframe and action plan.  What is the best timeframe for your situation? How do you best approach your specific transition?

“I had not interviewed for a new job in years so Amy’s help in updating my resume and giving me specific tools to network and interview was invaluable.”

Who is this for and who this isn’t for

This program is for mid-career professionals, or those who have left the workforce, and are seeking a professional change but are not quite sure how to get started. It provides a framework and action steps to take to start the work of identifying where you want to go and how to get there.

This program does not provide any general life coaching or relevant information beyond considerations for professional careers.

This is a program I designed for myself when I suddenly became a single mother who could no longer be a management consultant with a four-day-a-week travel schedule.  There was no other resource for me then, so I created my own.  There is no other resource now, so I started to share it with friends and eventually added it to my coaching practice.  It is simple, effective, and can get you up and running on your plan (or not) in a few short hours.

“Amy helped me understand how my unique experience set could be relevant to a variety of industries and roles. More importantly, she improved how I was able to present my value to executive recruiters and potential employers.  Her support throughout the process, from networking to negotiating, was excellent.”

Why be miserable trying to put aside a day or week and think through what it is you really want when I’ve created a methodology to do it for you in an evening or afternoon?

Take the first step now.  Who knows what you’ll learn?

Here are some things you may be experiencing where my experience will make a difference for you:

Feeling unhappy in your work situation but not really knowing why.

Let me help you walk through identifying the root cause, and what your options are for doing about it.

Feeling unhappy in your work situation and knowing exactly why.

Is your current team, boss, project, organizational structure, market environment, or workload worth walking away from?  Could be?  Why not think through it systematically?

Can you afford a change?

I’ll show you how to think through it.

Do you really want to give up the good things you have in your current situation?

I have a way to think about those things holistically and objectively.

Can I really get a different kind of job when I’ve been doing this one for so long?

Probably.  I can tell you how to approach it.

After We Work Together

  • Understand what it is you want to move towards and why

  • Have a detailed understanding of what you want and need, qualitatively and quantitatively

  • Have an elevator pitch to support the start of your search

  • Be able to speak to your transferrable skills

  • Have a structured job search template and sample timeline

  • Gain confidence in going after what you want

  • Fight back the “Sunday Scaries” by having a plan

The program is quick, requires some back-of-envelope calculations, and provides you with a plan outline.

It is critical to understand where you want to go and how you are going to get there: mistakes are costly, and inauthenticity is easy to spot in an interview. Use the framework once and apply it as often as you need.

The program will provide you with the foundations of your story, elevator pitch, and transferrable skill inventory.  A great value for a quick investment.

Lean on what you’ve learned about yourself, what you want, and what you need as touchstones for your search.

FAQs

Why is it important to understand what kind of change you want at the beginning of your job search?

The most important question you will be asked in any job interview is “why do you want this job?” In a career transition when you are not interviewing to be a “square peg” in a “square hole” this is even more important.  You need a really good answer to show that you may be going up a steeper learning curve than other candidates but you know it and you are ready to do what it takes.  If you are running away from a job you don’t like to just try something new, it will show.  You want to be very focused and authentic about why you are making a change.

I can’t really make a switch in careers, can I?

Why not?  Every job calls for great organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.  If you can sell software, you can sell real estate or investment products.  If you can run a corporate department, you can run a non-profit.  It’s all about positioning yourself and your experience.  And networking, a lot of networking.

What industries and roles will your methodology apply to?

I’ve worked with clients who have had PhDs and were looking to transition from academia to corporate work, clients who have been in marketing or sales and looking to come back into the workforce after decades away but don’t want to start at the bottom again, clients who wish to transfer from non-profit to corporate and vice-versa…the methodology is very widely applicable.

My clients have found jobs in biomedical engineering, financial services, green tech, brand consulting, think tanks, startups, customer success, SaaS, retail management, film production, and the State Department to name a few.  My approach is agnostic and works for any role in any industry.

How can you understand what employers want in all those industries?

I have worked in a wide variety of industries myself as a global management consultant.  My initial task was always to identify how those industries worked, what roles existed within them, and how they worked together to make the company successful.

As a result, I can break down what key skills are needed in a job or industry and what hiring managers look for to fill their jobs.  More and more, corporations and managers are realizing that filling a role with someone who has outside experience or comes from a different background can be beneficial to a team or department overall because they bring a fresh mindset and different perspectives. The work of social scientists like Carol Dweck and Adam Grant has helped further the idea that innovation through differing perspectives can add great value.

How long does it take to make a transition with your help?

That is very dependent on several variables: the amount of effort of the job seeker, the nature of the transition, the level of role being sought, and the amount of networking the job seeker does.  Anywhere from four months to a year can be a good guideline.

How will The Great Resignation impact my transition?

There may be more jobs in the area where you are applying, but hiring hurdles will still be high. You’ll need to be focused, authentic, and tell a cogent story.  Your temptation may be to apply to what has become available- don’t.

Why hire you over other coaches, resume writers, or consultants?

I encourage you to talk to others in the field.  Many offer more broadly defined life coaching services and that may be what you want.  I am only qualified to talk about careers. Additionally, ask for other professionals’ credentials: have they ever helped anyone with a transition?  At what point did they start and stop?  What industry did the client transition to and from?  Did they themselves ever make a career transition?
